The majority of respondents seem to be employed by a company that develops product and that has decided to staff an internal usability function.

Throughout this site, we make a distinction between two kinds of usability practitioners:

• Corporate practitioners work primarily with internal developers although there may be cases where they work with developers from outside their company, e.g., if they were to outsource development.

• Consultants work primarily with developers in other organizations.

Results

• The majority of respondents (65%) worked with developers who were internal to their company. This number rises to 86% if you count the number of practitioners who work with both internal and external developers.
• Only 14% on respondents worked exclusively with with developers who were external to their company.
• 21% of respondents said they worked with internal developers and external developers.
